Protecting Nova Scotia’s heritage barns and the endangered barn swallows that call them home.
Barn swallows, which are considered endangered here in Nova Scotia, are seeing their numbers drop because of habitat loss and other challenges. These birds, easy to spot with their forked tails and reddish throats, love open spaces and farm areas—especially barns and buildings—for nesting. Farmers can really help protect them by offering safe spots and suitable habitats for these helpful and fascinating birds.
In fact, the NSFA has teamed up with the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia and Environment & Climate Change Canada to support farmers in protecting their historic barns through heritage designation. Right now, only a few barns in Nova Scotia are officially recognized, but we’re working hard to change that and preserve these important structures—and the wildlife that depends on them.
